LAGOS, Nigeria — The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has officially selected Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as its candidate for the 2027 governorship election. The announcement follows Hamzat’s success in the party’s primary held on Thursday.

The primary took place at the APC Secretariat in Acme, Ogba, where party officials reported that the proceedings were conducted peacefully and transparently.

Gen. Jon Temlong (retd.), chairman of the APC National Governorship Election Committee, announced the results in the presence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, along with other party leaders and stakeholders, including Senator Ganiyu Solomon and former Deputy Governor Femi Pedro.

According to Temlong, Hamzat received 657,917 votes out of 657,974 accredited votes, while his nearest competitor, Lanre Jim-Kamal, garnered only one vote. Samuel Ajose, another aspirant, withdrew from the race prior to the elections.

“Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat has satisfied all guidelines set forth in the party’s constitution and is hereby affirmed as the winner of the governorship primary and the APC candidate for the 2027 election,” Temlong said on May 21, 2026.

In his acceptance speech, Hamzat thanked party leaders, particularly Governor Sanwo-Olu, for their support.

“I want to thank Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for what you have done for this state and the party,” Hamzat stated, expressing appreciation to members of the National Assembly, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and the electoral committee. He also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for his leadership.

“With humility, I accept the candidacy of the APC in the upcoming 2027 elections,” he added.
