Children’s Day stampede: Edo Govt begins investigation as police interrogate bouncer

Investigation Launched into Stadium Stampede During Children’s Day Celebration
BENIN CITY, Edo State — The Edo State Government has initiated an investigation into a stampede that occurred at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium during this year’s Children’s Day celebration on Wednesday. Several students sustained injuries in the incident.
The government confirmed that a bouncer involved in the event is currently under police interrogation to determine the causes of the stampede, both immediate and underlying.
Dr. Patrick Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, provided details about the situation in a statement issued from Benin City. He indicated that the chaos was triggered by a group of excited children who exhibited unruly behavior at one of the stadium’s entrances.
According to Ebojele, the situation escalated to a stampede, prompting a bouncer to use tear gas to manage the crowd. This led to a few students being injured as the incident unfolded.
The stadium was filled with thousands of children eager to participate in the day’s festivities, and all entrances to the facility were opened to accommodate the large turnout.
Ebojele noted that Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, who was present at the event, promptly provided first aid to the injured children. Those requiring further medical attention were transported to Edo Specialist Hospital and have since returned home safely.
The Chief Press Secretary reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all attendees, particularly children. He characterized the incident as an isolated occurrence at a large gathering, emphasizing that it would not undermine Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to the welfare of children.
Ebojele credited the large attendance to the Governor’s significant investments in education. He also expressed gratitude to security personnel, medical staff, and volunteers for their swift actions, which helped alleviate the situation.
Additionally, he urged social media users to avoid spreading unverified information that could incite unnecessary panic within the community.
