Portugal coach Martinez explains why he kept Ronaldo on despite missed chances against Nigeria

Martinez Defends Ronaldo’s Extended Playtime in Friendly Victory
LISBON, Portugal — Portugal’s head coach, Roberto Martinez, explained his decision to keep captain Cristiano Ronaldo on the field for over an hour during the national team’s 2-1 victory against Nigeria in a friendly match on Wednesday night.
Ronaldo, 41, struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities during the match held in Leiria before being substituted for Gonçalo Ramos in the 65th minute.
Martinez clarified his strategy regarding player time on the pitch, stating, “Diogo Costa had a 90-minute plan, Cristiano 60. Nuno Mendes was going to have 30 and 45 minutes for Vitinha and João Neves. I am very pleased with the attitude and focus of all the players.”
The coach expressed pride in his squad’s ability to execute a cohesive game plan and make synchronized changes throughout the match.
Looking ahead, Ronaldo will aim to enhance his goal-scoring performance as Portugal prepares to face DR Congo in their World Cup opener next Wednesday.
