Lagos: Police to impound vehicles with covered, defaced number plates

Lagos Police to Begin Enforcement of Vehicle Registration Regulations

LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command will launch a statewide enforcement operation on Monday aimed at addressing issues related to vehicles with concealed, altered, unauthorized, obscured, or missing registration number plates.

The announcement was made on Sunday by police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi, who stated that the initiative aligns with directives from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu. The operation is intended to enhance public safety and security throughout the state.

Adebisi noted that the enforcement action aims to deter criminal activities by ensuring that individuals cannot conceal their identities through the use of improperly displayed registration plates.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani has instructed all police formations in the state to implement this directive rigorously. “The Commissioner has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to initiate enforcement measures and ensure compliance within their jurisdictions,” Adebisi said.

She emphasized that vehicles found violating the registration regulations will be impounded and subjected to further investigation in accordance with existing laws.

The police spokesperson clarified that the operation is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but rather to improve crime prevention, aid in identifying suspects, and bolster overall security in the area.

Adebisi encouraged motorists, transport operators, and fleet managers to ensure their vehicles display valid, official, and clearly visible registration plates at all times. She also urged vehicle owners to keep relevant documentation up-to-date and readily accessible for inspection by law enforcement.

Reaffirming the police command’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property, Adebisi emphasized that the department will continue to implement measures to create a safer environment for both residents and visitors in Lagos State.

The police command has requested that the public remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals, vehicles, or activities using the following emergency lines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870, and 09168630000.
