Seven Vigilantes Killed in Armed Attack in Niger State
KOTONKORO, Niger State — Seven members of a local vigilante group were killed during an armed assault at a security camp in Niger State on Saturday. The attack occurred at Matseri Camp, located in the Kotonkoro District of the Mariga Local Government Area.
Security expert Bakatsine reported on social media platform X that the attackers originated from the Sangeko area of neighboring Zamfara State. They executed a surprise attack on the vigilantes’ camp, opening fire on the security volunteers stationed there.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the vigilantes engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle but were ultimately overwhelmed. Bakatsine noted that despite the casualties, the security volunteers managed to inflict casualties on several of the assailants during the exchange.
This incident raises ongoing security concerns in both Niger and Zamfara States, where armed groups have consistently targeted communities and security personnel.
As of now, authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
