Petrol station razed as tanker bursts into flame in Umuahia

Fire Destroys Petrol Station in Abia State

Nkwoegwu Town, Umuahia North LGA, Abia State — A fire erupted at the Aka God petrol station on Sunday night, resulting in extensive damage to the facility. The blaze began around 6:30 PM and continued for several hours.

Initial reports indicate the fire was triggered by an explosion from a loaded petrol tanker on-site. Although no injuries or fatalities were reported, the incident caused significant financial losses, with goods valued at millions of naira destroyed and damages to adjacent properties.

Efforts by local youths and community members to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful, as the fire intensified. Firefighters from the Abia State Fire Service were alerted and arrived at approximately 7 PM, promptly deploying their equipment. Their intervention ultimately prevented the fire from spreading to nearby private residences and a medical facility.

Community members expressed relief that there were no casualties but voiced disappointment over the destruction of local investment. Chukwunenye Alajemba, Senior Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Homeland Security, Fire, and Emergency Services, attributed the successful containment of the blaze to prompt action from his office.
