Gunmen Kill Five in Attack at Mining Site in Plateau State

JOS, Nigeria — Five youths were killed and several others sustained injuries in an attack by gunmen suspected to be Fulani bandits at a local mining site in Gero village, Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Tuesday, June 16.

The assault occurred around 3 p.m., just hours after a separate incident at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, approximately five kilometers away, during which three security personnel were reportedly killed.

Witnesses, including Gero community resident Festus Dalyop, indicated that the victims were engaged in mining when the assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire. Five individuals were killed on the spot, while others suffered various degrees of injury.

Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth-Moulders Association (BYM), condemned both attacks. He described the incidents as indicators of the increasing security threats faced by the local communities and strategic institutions in the region.

“These attacks reflect worsening insecurity in surrounding communities and raise concerns about the safety of residents and institutions,” Tengwong stated during a press briefing. He emphasized the need for urgent action by security agencies to prevent further violence and restore confidence among local populations.

The state police spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incidents and stated that an investigation has been launched, along with a manhunt for the assailants involved in the attack on the miners.
