ASUU accuses Gombe, Plateau of failing to implement 2025 agreement

Universities Union Warns of Potential Unrest Over Agreement Implementation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Bauchi Zone criticized the governments of Gombe and Plateau states on Thursday for not implementing an agreement established between the Federal Government and ASUU in December 2025. The union cautioned that failure to comply with the agreement may lead to industrial unrest at the affected universities.

During a press conference at Gombe State University, ASUU Bauchi Zonal Coordinator Timothy-Aku Namo emphasized that Gombe State University and Plateau State University have not yet adopted the provisions of the agreement, which was aimed at improving the welfare of academic staff.

“On December 23, 2025, the Federal Government of Nigeria signed an agreement with ASUU following extensive negotiations involving both federal and state governments,” Namo stated.

He pointed out that while the Federal Government released funds for salary components and set up an Implementation Monitoring Committee, many state governments have not met their commitments.

Namo expressed concerns that several state governments have yet to begin the implementation process, with some claiming that the agreement solely involves the Federal Government and ASUU.

A forensic audit conducted by ASUU’s National Executive Council on June 21, 2026, revealed that only Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State and Ekiti State University had complied with the agreement among the state-owned institutions assessed.

In addition to the implementation issues, Namo noted that the universities are also facing unresolved matters related to staff welfare and industrial harmony.

He urged the authorities of the two universities to intervene promptly to prevent the situation from escalating into further industrial action.
