ICE Officer Fatally Shoots Man During Houston Arrest Attempt

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, the individual killed, is the latest death linked to ICE operations since the Trump administration began intensified immigration enforcement.

Houston, Texas – A man has been fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during an attempted vehicle stop in Houston, the agency reported. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, was killed on Tuesday while allegedly attempting to evade arrest during a targeted operation.

According to ICE, Salgado Araujo ignored commands to stop his vehicle, purportedly ramming an ICE law enforcement vehicle and trying to run over an officer with his car. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, described the incident as a use of force in response to an imminent threat.

Ronaldo Salgado, believed to be Salgado Araujo’s son, claimed to a local Spanish-language television station that his father was searching for workers at the time of the shooting.

Video footage obtained by Reuters from a nearby business showed a person lying on the ground next to a white van, surrounded by law enforcement officers, following the shooting.

Democratic U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia called for a thorough, independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. “All available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation,” Garcia said in a social media post.

Juan Proano, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, supported calls for transparency, stating, “We don’t take DHS at their word at all. There should be an independent investigation, and they should release all the videos.”

Salgado Araujo’s death marks the latest instance of fatalities linked to ICE operations, with at least six such incidents reported since the escalation of immigration enforcement under the previous administration. This follows similar incidents in January that resulted in the deaths of two individuals, leading to disputes over the circumstances claimed by ICE.

Despite criticism and scrutiny, ICE arrests have reportedly surged recently, with approximately 2,000 migrants detained daily, according to Reuters.
