Container truck loses control, crashes into six vehicles on Kara bridge in Lagos
A 40-foot container truck lost control due to a mechanical failure and crashed into six other vehicles on the Kara Bridge, inward OPIC, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Lagos State on Tuesday morning, September 15, 2026.
The accident took place shortly after 6 a.m., prompting a response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). LASEMA dispatched its LRT Tiger Squad based at C3, which arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a distress call.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found seven vehicles involved in the incident. The vehicles included the container truck, a white Toyota Hilux (registration number BDG-422XY), an interstate bus (registration number GBY 784XY), a Hyundai Odyssey (registration number AAA 48BP), a Sienna with no registration number, a Toyota Highlander (registration number EKY 491HB), and a Mitsubishi Hilux (registration number JJJ 977JT).
Preliminary investigations indicated that the container truck developed a mechanical fault while in motion, leading to a loss of control before colliding with the six other vehicles. LASEMA activated its incident management protocol and took charge of coordinating the emergency response.
LASEMA worked in conjunction with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force to manage traffic at the site, prevent further incidents, and ensure the safety of motorists. With the assistance of private towing companies, the affected vehicles were removed from the roadway and relocated to the roadside.
The agency reported that no fatalities or injuries occurred as a result of the accident. Once the vehicles were evacuated, traffic flow on the bridge was restored, and LASTMA officials remained on site to monitor conditions and facilitate smooth vehicle movement.
The recovered vehicles were subsequently handed over to police officers at the scene for documentation and further action.
Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, praised the quick and professional response of the LRT team, LASTMA, and police. He noted that their coordinated efforts helped prevent casualties and restored traffic efficiently.
Oke-Osanyintolu reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enhancing emergency response capabilities through continued investment in infrastructure, training, and the decentralization of response units. He urged motorists, especially those operating articulated vehicles, to maintain their vehicles regularly, adhere to roadworthiness regulations, and exercise caution on major highways. Additionally, he encouraged the public to promptly report emergencies and traffic incidents to LASEMA via its toll-free emergency lines.
