Two escape death as truck overturns on Lagos-Ikeja road

At least two people were injured on Saturday when a 20-foot container truck overturned after colliding with another vehicle along Ikorodu Road in the Ojota area of Lagos State.

The accident involved a truck with the registration number SUL 460 ZY and resulted in considerable traffic disruptions on the busy roadway. At the time of the incident, the container truck was carrying three individuals.

Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that the container truck collided with a flat-body truck, whose driver reportedly fled the scene before emergency responders arrived. The force of the collision caused the container truck to overturn, blocking approximately half of the carriageway.

The collision also damaged a high-tension electricity pole, leading to fallen power cables across the road. This situation added to the hazards, rendering the affected section inaccessible to motorists, pedestrians, and emergency personnel.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the driver’s assistant suffered severe injuries to the head and chest, along with multiple bruises. The driver sustained injuries to the mouth and shoulder.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Government quickly arrived to provide medical assistance to the injured. Both LASEMA and the Lagos State Ambulance Service offered first aid and advanced medical care at the scene to stabilize the victims before they could be transported for further treatment.

Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority were also deployed to manage traffic and assist with the emergency response. Additionally, workers from Ikeja Electric arrived to secure and manage the fallen electricity cables following the damage to the pole.

Authorities are continuing efforts to clear the obstruction and restore normal traffic flow along Ikorodu Road.
