Taraba not poor, resources underutilised, mismanaged by govt — Nyameh

TARABA STATE, Nigeria — Professor Jerome Nyameh, the Accord Party’s candidate for governor in Taraba State, asserted that the state is rich in resources but suffers from mismanagement and underutilization of its natural wealth.

Speaking on Monday in Jalingo, Nyameh highlighted the developmental challenges facing Taraba, emphasizing its significant human and natural resources that could potentially transform the state’s economy and improve living conditions for its residents.

“Taraba is not poor,” Nyameh said. “We are blessed with natural resources, but these resources have been underutilized and mismanaged.”

The candidate pointed to the state’s vast agricultural land, mineral deposits, forests, water resources, and tourism potential, noting that previous administrations have failed to fully exploit these for sustainable development. He attributed the ongoing economic difficulties not to a shortage of resources but to inadequate planning and a lack of investment-friendly policies.

Nyameh stressed that effective leadership, transparency, and proper investment could enable the state to generate significant internal revenue and create job opportunities for its growing population. He emphasized the agricultural sector’s potential, advocating for mechanized farming, agro-processing, enhanced market access, and the development of value chains.

He also called for responsible exploration of the state’s mineral deposits, advocating for regulations that prevent environmental harm while ensuring local communities benefit from mining activities.

In addition, Nyameh identified tourism as a sector with considerable promise, pointing to Taraba’s mountains, forests, and wildlife as attractions that could be developed to boost revenue and draw visitors.

To unlock the economic potential of rural communities, he urged investments in essential infrastructure, including roads, electricity, water supply, and healthcare facilities. According to Nyameh, a government committed to development must go beyond rhetoric and establish policies that translate Taraba’s natural assets into real benefits for its citizens.

He proposed a governance model focused on accountability, efficient resource management, and collaboration with the private sector to spur economic growth. Nyameh expressed confidence that with proper management of its resources and meaningful participation by its residents, Taraba could emerge as a leading economic hub in Nigeria.

He called on the people of Taraba to demand greater accountability from their political leaders and support initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable development, job creation, and enhanced living standards throughout the state.
