27 motorists prosecuted for traffic offences in Jigawa
The Jigawa State Police Command has prosecuted 27 motorists for allegedly violating various road traffic laws as part of its ongoing Operation Velvet.
According to a statement from the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, the motorists faced charges for offenses including overloading, driving without valid driver’s licenses, and using unauthorized tinted permits.
The arrests and subsequent vehicle impoundments occurred during an enforcement exercise aimed at promoting road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations across the state.
The statement affirmed that the vehicles were confiscated in accordance with legal protocols, and those arrested were brought before the appropriate courts for prosecution.
Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala clarified that the operation is not directed at any specific individual or group. Instead, it seeks to encourage discipline among motorists, protect lives and property, and ensure adherence to road traffic laws.
Murtala urged motorists in Jigawa to obtain and carry valid driver’s licenses, to refrain from overloading, and to comply with vehicle registration and roadworthiness requirements. He also cautioned against the use of unauthorized tinted permits, emphasizing the importance of operating within legal guidelines.
The police command indicated that Operation Velvet will continue and be extended throughout the state, including major towns, highways, feeder roads, and other strategic locations.
The police also called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement personnel during these enforcement efforts, assuring compliant motorists that they have nothing to fear.
