Symbolic Funerals Held for Missing Relatives in Nepal

Families in Nepal are conducting symbolic funerals for relatives who are still unaccounted for following a catastrophic flash flood that occurred on August 26. This act, rooted in Hindu tradition, aims to provide spiritual solace for families who are left to mourn without the bodies of their loved ones, which they presume dead.
The flash flood has been described as one of the deadliest disasters to strike the Himalayan nation in recent years. The natural disaster has claimed more than 1,200 lives, with an estimated 4,750 individuals still missing across Nepal and the Tibet region of China. The relentless wave of mud and debris devastated towns, destroyed roads and bridges, and severely damaged several hydropower dams.
In response to the crisis, Nepali authorities have been burying recovered victims in temporary graves while efforts to identify the remains are underway. DNA samples are being collected, along with photographic documentation of distinguishing facial features, to assist in matching the deceased with the missing persons and facilitating the return of remains to their families.
As families seek closure, the symbolic funerals provide a means of honoring their loved ones amid the ongoing search and recovery efforts.
