Five Charged in Alleged Russian Intelligence Plots
Five individuals have been charged in connection with alleged plots tied to Russian intelligence, according to an indictment unsealed by the United States Department of Justice. The charges involve surveillance, recruitment, and plans for murder across various locations, including the United States.
Prosecutors announced the charges on Tuesday, stating the defendants acted on behalf of Russian intelligence services. All five suspects are currently at large.
The individuals charged are Yuri Khrameev, 63, and his son, Kirill Khrameev, 27, both of Russian nationality; Cubans Oemis Romagoza Durruthy and Yaidel Delgado Suarez, both 35; and 22-year-old Venezuelan Angel Eduardo Castro.
Each defendant is charged with conspiring to finance terrorism. Additionally, Yuri Khrameev, Yaidel Delgado Suarez, and Angel Eduardo Castro face extra charges of conspiring to commit murder for hire.
At a press conference, Attorney General Todd Blanche outlined the nature of the alleged plots, which included attempts to assassinate a Russian dissident believed to reside in the Washington, D.C. area. Justice Department officials disclosed that the network had recruited several individuals within the United States to conduct surveillance on Russian dissidents, targeting both domestic and Lithuanian individuals.
In one reported instance, an individual was allegedly promised $40,000 to eliminate a target based in the U.S. Another was offered $25,000 the previous year for a similar contract in Lithuania.
As of now, the Russian embassy in the United States has not responded to inquiries regarding the indictments. The Kremlin has persistently denied allegations of orchestrating assassination operations abroad, including within the United States.
