Abia State Police Arrest Four on Child Trafficking Charges
Umuahia, Abia State — The Abia State Police Command announced the arrest of four individuals in connection with alleged conspiracy, child stealing, and trafficking.
In a press release issued on Monday, officials revealed that the arrests took place on September 16, 2026. Those detained include Gladys Nathaniel, Victor Udochukwu, Chijioke Obunwa, and Onyeonoro Chinwe.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the suspects are accused of conspiring to abduct a four-day-old infant from her mentally unstable mother and selling the child to another individual. The arrests followed a thorough investigation by the Police’s Violent Crimes Response Unit and Rapid Response Unit based in Obehie.
The release detailed that both the infant and her mother were rescued during the operation. The mother has since been reunited with her family for necessary care and medical attention, while the baby is under the protective custody of the Ministry of Women Affairs.
DSP Chinaka confirmed that the suspects remain in police custody as the investigation continues at the State Criminal Investigation Department. Once the inquiry concludes, authorities plan to bring charges against the suspects in court.
