Travel agent docked over alleged N6m visa fraud in Abeokuta
A 48-year-old travel agent, Akiah Edward, was arraigned Tuesday at the Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo for allegedly defrauding a client of 6 million naira.
Edward faces two charges: obtaining money under false pretenses and conduct likely to breach the peace. The case, overseen by Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Sam-Obaleye, stems from an incident reported to have occurred on June 21 at approximately 2:30 p.m. in Abeokuta.
Prosecutor Evelyn Motim detailed in court that Edward was introduced to the complainant, Nasir Abiola, as a travel agent who could facilitate a Canadian visa application. Motim claimed Edward initially requested a deposit of 500,000 naira to initiate the travel arrangements.
Further allegations indicate that Edward subsequently collected a total of 6 million naira, which included an additional 4.7 million naira and an extra 800,000 naira. It was agreed that a remaining balance of 3 million naira would be paid upon completion of the visa process.
Motim reported that after making the total payment, Abiola sought updates on his visa application, only to be met with unsubstantiated excuses from Edward.
These allegations contravene Sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006. Edward pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following the arraignment, Magistrate Sam-Obaleye granted Edward bail set at 9 million naira, requiring two sureties of similar financial standing, who must be registered bondsmen with the Ogun State Judiciary. Edward is to remain at the Ibara Correctional Centre until bail conditions are met. The case is scheduled for a hearing on October 14.
