Police apprehend man for hacking mother to death in Abia
The Abia State Police Command announced the arrest of Livingston Nwakanma, a suspect in the alleged murder of his mother, Mrs. Nwaigbe Nwakanma. The incident occurred in Osaa Ukwu, within the Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
According to police officials, prompt action by officers prevented Nwakanma from being attacked by a mob that had gathered at the scene.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the details of the arrest in a statement to DAILY POST. She reported that the Eastern Ngwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call on September 19, 2026, regarding the incident, prompting officers to rush to the location.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Mrs. Nwakanma, who had sustained fatal injuries from a machete. A medical professional on the scene confirmed her death, and her body was subsequently moved to a morgue.
DSP Chinaka noted that the suspect was rescued from the mob and transported to a hospital for medical care. He is currently in police custody while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to reports, Livingston Nwakanma was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the alleged murder, which took place while his mother was preparing a meal in her kitchen.
