Hacker Group Claims Breach of FBI Employee Data

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating a breach of its jobs website after a hacker group known as ShinyHunters claimed to have obtained sensitive information on thousands of FBI employees.
In a statement released Wednesday, the FBI confirmed it is aware of the situation, stating, “The FBI is aware of a cybercriminal enterprise group claiming a compromise of the fbijobs.gov portal and alleged impact to FBI employee personally identifiable information.”
The agency indicated that the point of breach has not yet been determined and is exploring whether it occurred through a third party or its own enterprise. “We are actively and aggressively investigating this matter and working closely with those third-party providers that support fbijobs.gov to mitigate any and all risk,” the statement continued.
Reports from several media outlets, including Reuters, indicate that parts of the data—reported to be between two and three terabytes—have been seen. According to these reports, the information allegedly contains detailed records of bureau officials’ job assignments, including sensitive operations related to Chinese espionage, Russian intelligence, and drug cartels.
ShinyHunters announced on Tuesday that it breached the FBI and acquired data on a substantial number of current and former employees. The group asserts it is holding this data hostage, demanding the FBI retract an unfavorable statement released about them in May. On Wednesday, the hackers stated they are attempting to prevent the personnel information from being widely shared.
In May, the FBI characterized ShinyHunters as “threat actors” noted for harassing victims and using both real and exaggerated claims of sensitive information to extract payments. It further explained that the group may falsely claim to possess damaging information, including embarrassing photographs or videos of victims, which often do not exist.
The FBI has been a frequent target of cyberattacks. Earlier this year, in March, the agency reported investigating “suspicious activities” on an internal system that holds sensitive information tied to surveillance operations and investigations. That same month, a pro-Iranian hacking group claimed to have compromised the email account of FBI Director Kash Patel, releasing years-old photographs and personal documents online.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the fbijobs.gov portal remains offline while the investigation continues.
