Police arrest nine over alleged theft of 33 motorcycles, nine killings in Jigawa
Nine Arrested in Connection with Motorcycle Theft and Violent Crimes in Jigawa State
The Jigawa State Police Command has detained nine individuals believed to be part of a motorcycle theft syndicate operating in Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna states. This group is also suspected of involvement in other violent crimes.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by Police Public Relations Officer SP Lawan Shiisu Adamu, the suspects admitted to their involvement in the killings of nine individuals and stealing at least 33 motorcycles.
The investigation commenced following an incident in which one of the suspects allegedly attacked a motorcycle rider in the Aujara District of Jahun Local Government Area and stole his motorcycle. Local police, alongside vigilantes, responded promptly, recovering the stolen motorcycle and apprehending the suspect.
The statement detailed that the arrest led to the identification and capture of additional gang members believed to be operating across the three states. Through thorough investigation, the suspects disclosed their participation in the theft of 33 motorcycles from various locations in Kaduna, Kano, and Jigawa.
Authorities noted that the suspects acknowledged their involvement in violent attacks resulting in injuries to some victims. Additionally, they confessed to the killings linked to their criminal activities across the states.
The suspects have been identified as Ado Saleh, also known as Datti, 55, from Kawari village in Ajingi Local Government Area, Kano State; Abdullahi Saidu, 37, from Kwanar Dangora village; Magaji Danladi from Auramo Quarters in Ringim LGA; Sabiu Miko from Kaugama LGA; Habibu Dan Iya from Didi village in Gagarawa LGA; Shamsu Sani, 32, from Ajingi LGA; Ali Salisu, 40, from Yanbaru settlement in Sule Tankarkar LGA; Alhassan Isa, known as Tata, from Shuwarin in Kiyawa LGA; and Ado Ali from Baranda village in Dutse LGA.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, commended the officers involved in the operation and acknowledged the crucial role of a local resident whose quick action aided the recovery of the stolen motorcycle and the arrest of the initial suspect.
CP Murtala has instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse to conduct an ongoing, thorough investigation. This inquiry aims to identify additional gang members, recover more stolen motorcycles, examine the circumstances surrounding the reported attacks and killings, and facilitate the prosecution of individuals found guilty.
