2027: I’ll resign as minister if Tinubu loses FCT, Rivers – Wike
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has stated that he should resign from his position if he is unable to secure electoral votes for President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Wike made this declaration during a meeting on Wednesday with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja. The former governor of Rivers State emphasized the accountability of political appointees for the electoral outcomes in their regions.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, I am not worthy to be here,” Wike remarked, stressing that his ability to serve as FCT minister hinges on the support he can muster for the President in the territory. He asserted that he would view himself unfit for the ministerial role if Tinubu did not achieve electoral success in the FCT.
“Should I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation if the President does not win in Rivers State and the FCT,” he stated.
Wike further elaborated that he would not continue to express public support for Tinubu if he fails to secure electoral backing in his home state of Rivers. “If I return to my state and the President cannot win, what am I shouting about the President when I cannot win?” he questioned.
He encouraged other political appointees to embrace similar accountability in their roles. “I want other people to take these kinds of challenges. I have taken Rivers State and FCT; let everybody take,” Wike said.
His remarks come amid political tensions with some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding a coalition he founded leading up to the 2027 elections. Wike, a former governor and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), remains an influential figure in the political landscape as he serves in Tinubu’s cabinet.
