Lagos seals 14 properties for discharging untreated sewage into public drains
The Lagos State Government has shut down 14 properties in various locations, including Ikotun, Ikoyi, Isheri-Osun, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Amuwo-Odofin, for allegedly discharging untreated sewage into public drains. These closures are part of a broader initiative to enforce wastewater management regulations.
The action was carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), which has intensified monitoring and compliance efforts to address the improper disposal of untreated wastewater. The closures followed public complaints and findings from routine inspections by the agency.
LSWMO officials stated that the measure is intended to protect public health, safeguard the environment, and ensure adherence to wastewater management regulations in Lagos State. According to General Manager Adefemi Afolabi, the affected properties were found to be discharging untreated sewage from septic tanks and other wastewater systems. Issues involved included broken or deteriorating sewer chambers, illegally connected sewer pipes, and the intentional discharge of septic tank contents into public drainage systems.
These practices have resulted in foul odors, fecal contamination, and environmental disturbances, thereby posing health risks to the community. Afolabi emphasized the importance of proper wastewater management, describing it as a public health imperative. He noted that the consequences of improperly handled sewage affect not only the individual properties involved but also the broader environment and public well-being.
“We will continue to respond to credible complaints and act wherever our investigations establish violations,” Afolabi stated. He urged property owners, residents, facility managers, and businesses to comply with approved wastewater management practices.
The LSWMO also encouraged the public to report suspected cases of illegal wastewater discharge and other environmental violations, underscoring that timely reports would aid in investigations and enforcement actions.
