INEC staff Nigeria’s least paid workers, says Amupitan

INEC Chairman Highlights Low Pay for Election Commission Staff
ABUJA – The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, stated on Tuesday that INEC employees are consistently among the lowest-paid workers in Nigeria.
Amupitan made this assertion during a World Press Conference where he discussed the commission’s preparations for the upcoming 2027 general elections. He emphasized that improving the welfare of INEC staff is essential for fostering greater accountability within the organization.
“INEC staff are the least paid in Nigeria. We believe that in order to demand accountability from our staff, they must receive a living wage,” Amupitan said.
He further explained that INEC has been removed from the civil service payment structure and now operates its own separate electoral and salary system.
“We are not classified as civil servants. What we have learned under the civil service payment structure, from which we have recently separated, is that we require our own electoral structure and distinct salary framework,” he added.
Additionally, Amupitan noted that INEC has identified several gaps within the electoral system and is actively working to address these issues.
“There are many gaps that we have discovered. We believe that by addressing these, we can resolve some of the challenges we face within the system,” he said.
