Goldman Sachs General Counsel Resigns Amid Epstein Connection
Kathy Ruemmler, the chief legal officer at Goldman Sachs, has announced her resignation following revelations of her connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was previously convicted as a sex offender.
Ruemmler’s departure comes after the U.S. Department of Justice released investigative files highlighting her interactions with Epstein. The documents indicated that she had received gifts from him, provided advice on managing his public image, and referred to him as akin to an older brother.
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon confirmed her resignation in a statement, expressing respect for her decision. “Throughout her tenure, Kathy has been an extraordinary general counsel, and we are grateful for her contributions and sound advice on a wide range of consequential legal matters for the firm,” Solomon stated. He added that Ruemmler, recognized as one of the most accomplished professionals in her field, will be missed for her mentorship and friendship.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Ruemmler—who previously served as White House counsel during President Barack Obama’s administration—stated that she would step down at the end of June. She explained that the media scrutiny surrounding her past relationship with Epstein had become a distraction. Ruemmler has expressed regret for her association with Epstein and has denied offering him legal representation or advocating for him to any third party.
Ruemmler’s resignation marks another exit among prominent figures linked to the Epstein case. On the same day, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the resignation of Cabinet Secretary Chris Wormald amid controversy regarding his appointment of Peter Mandelson, the former U.S. ambassador, whose ties to Epstein are under police investigation. Additionally, Norwegian authorities searched properties belonging to former Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland as part of a corruption probe related to his associations with Epstein.
