Australia’s Steve Smith Sets Test Catches Record as South Africa Bowled Out for 284

DURBAN, South Africa — Steve Smith made history on Sunday by surpassing the record for the most career catches by a fielder in Test cricket, as Australia established a commanding position in the first Test against South Africa.
Smith achieved his landmark 223rd catch at Kingsmead Stadium, where South Africa was dismissed for 284 in response to Australia’s first innings total of 390. He recorded four catches during the match, including two on the day, solidifying his place as the leading fielder in Test cricket.
In Australia’s second innings, Nic Maddinson remained unbeaten on 17, while Travis Head added 10 not out, guiding the team to an overall lead of 139 runs before play was halted due to poor light for the third consecutive day. The pair scored 33 runs in just 5.4 overs prior to the interruption.
Maddinson, who struggled with a duck in the first innings, found his form against South African bowlers, hitting two fours and a six in his brief but aggressive innings.
On the bowling front, Australia’s attack maintained consistent pressure on the South African batsmen, who contributed to their own dismissals through a series of ill-advised shots. Six members of the Proteas reached scores of 30 runs or more, with David Bedingham top-scoring at 49.
Australian captain Pat Cummins led the bowling attack with three wickets for 54 runs. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon each claimed two wickets, demonstrating the effectiveness of Australia’s seasoned bowling quartet.
Smith entered the day with 219 Test catches, one shy of the record held by England’s Joe Root. He equaled the record by catching Temba Bavuma and then broke it with a sharp catch of Bedingham off Cummins’ bowling. Smith showcased his exceptional skills in the slips with a remarkable one-handed catch to dismiss South African wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, who attempted a reverse sweep. He capped off his outstanding fielding performance with a catch of the last batsman, Anrich Nortje, from Beau Webster’s delivery.
Smith’s total of 223 catches places him ahead of all but 11 specialist wicketkeepers in Test cricket history.
