Fubara hails Disu’s professionalism, pledges support for police

RIVERS STATE, Nigeria — Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu for his professionalism during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State. Fubara described Disu’s recent appointment as head of the Nigeria Police Force as a testament to his dedication to duty.

During a courtesy visit at Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Fubara reflected on the challenges Disu faced while serving in the state amid significant political unrest. The governor noted that despite these difficulties, Disu remained steadfast in his constitutional responsibilities, earning him the respect that ultimately led to his current role.

“I feel very happy that somebody who left here in a very difficult situation, in a very trying time, is here today visiting us in a higher capacity,” Fubara said.

The governor characterized Disu’s visit as a homecoming, emphasizing that the former police commissioner’s service during a turbulent period would be an important part of the state’s history.

Fubara also acknowledged the impending challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence in Disu’s capacity to fulfill his duties. “You are taking this new office at a very difficult time, too, considering the challenges we are already facing in this country,” he said, adding, “I strongly believe that God will give you the grace to surmount that challenge.”

He assured Disu of the Rivers State government’s support in maintaining law and order and expressed hope for his success in office.

Earlier, Disu stated that his visit was intended to express gratitude to the governor and the people of Rivers State for their cooperation during his time as the state’s police commissioner. He also mentioned attending the launch of a book authored by Dame Stella Okuyiga, a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police and one of the first 20 women to join the Nigeria Police Force.

He praised Okuyiga, who is 94 years old, as a “living monument,” and lauded the residents of Rivers State for their role in fostering peace during his tenure.

Disu thanked Fubara for the support he received while in the state and acknowledged the assistance being provided to his successor. He emphasized that effective policing relies heavily on the collaboration between the police and the state government, noting that other security agencies also expressed their appreciation for the governor’s commitment to supporting the security sector in Rivers State.
