APC campaign: Tinubu has nothing to say to Nigerians — Baba-Ahmed

By Adegboyega Adeleye

The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has criticized President Bola Tinubu, labeling him a failure as the 2027 general election approaches. During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed expressed concern over the administration’s handling of ongoing issues including insecurity and economic hardship.

Baba-Ahmed remarked on Tinubu’s governance, stating, “Tinubu inherited Nigeria, but what has he done with it? He inherited a poor country; he inherited weak institutions; he inherited poverty and insecurity. We don’t blame him, but he’s been in power for three and a half years. He is a failure.”

The PRP chairman further questioned Tinubu’s limited campaign strategy, asking why the president has not engaged more with Nigerians to discuss his policies and their effects on daily life. “Why doesn’t Tinubu commit himself to say, I want to see Nigerians, I want them to hear me explain why they are more hungry?” he inquired.

When asked about Tinubu’s choice to campaign in only select locations, Baba-Ahmed suggested the president lacks substantive messages for the public. “Yes, he has nothing to say to them,” he asserted.

Baba-Ahmed also criticized the administration’s economic measures, asserting that the challenges faced by citizens have intensified under Tinubu’s leadership. He stated that while tough decisions have been made, many have been detrimental rather than beneficial. “A tough decision doesn’t have to be a good decision,” he said.

The PRP chairman highlighted the educational challenges facing children in conflict-affected regions, questioning the government’s initiatives in light of worsening security. “Do you know how many millions of children can’t go to school under Tinubu’s watch in this country?” he asked, referencing the impact of banditry and kidnapping.

On the topic of security, Baba-Ahmed stated, “Security has gotten considerably worse, it has never been worse like this.” He expressed skepticism regarding the government’s defense of its economic policies, describing the presentation of statistics as propaganda and indicating that they do not accurately reflect the lived experiences of many Nigerians. “Nigerians are not going to buy it. Children are not going to school, life is more insecure, life is harder,” he asserted.

As the president prepares to seek another term, Baba-Ahmed argued that Tinubu’s appeal relies on convincing the public that current challenges will ultimately lead to better conditions in the future. “If you give me another four years, we will get better,” he quoted the president as suggesting.

The PRP chairman further criticized the government’s approach to economic policy, asserting that foresight should inform decisions that significantly impact citizens. “A thinking president will say let me do one or two things first, because I will impoverish people and the cost of transportation is vital and central to everything,” he concluded.
