MADRID — Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, may face disciplinary action after he compared Real Madrid’s communication strategies to those employed by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. The National Sports Council (CSD) of Spain has referred the incident to the country’s Administrative Court for Sport (TAD), following Tebas’s remarks in a social media post on October 16.

The CSD issued a statement indicating it was necessary for the TAD to evaluate whether Tebas’s comments constituted a serious violation of Spain’s 1990 Sports Law, which prohibits “notorious and public acts that harm sporting dignity or decorum.”

In its statement, the CSD emphasized the importance of upholding the values that ensure sports remain a realm of respect, coexistence, and fair play.

Real Madrid has called for Tebas, 64, to resign, following his criticism of the club’s attempts to undermine the integrity of refereeing in Spain. Tebas stated that Real Madrid’s internal television channel frequently suggested that referees conspired to prevent the club from achieving victories.

He characterized these tactics as reminiscent of “propaganda mechanisms exploited by Goebbels.” Tebas later attempted to clarify that his comments were aimed at discussing “those propaganda techniques” rather than aligning with Nazi ideology.

In a subsequent post on X, he reiterated his point, stating he made a distinction between propaganda methods and ideology. Tebas also questioned the implications of Real Madrid’s accusations against the refereeing system. He asked why such claims did not similarly harm “sporting dignity and decorum,” highlighting the potential impact on clubs, referees, and fans.

Real Madrid has routinely expressed dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions, claiming last year that officiating in Spain was “rigged” and “totally discredited.” La Liga did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding these developments.
