Barcelona Fined Over Unauthorized Approach for Alvarez

Barcelona’s attempt to acquire Julian Alvarez has resulted in a fine from the Spanish Football Association (FA) amounting to 602 euros ($670). The penalty stems from a complaint lodged by Atletico Madrid, which accused Barcelona of contacting the Argentine forward without prior written notification.
Alvarez, whose current contract with Atletico extends until June 2030, was the focus of the complaint. The sanction was issued under Article 133 of the federation’s regulations. Additionally, Atletico brought the matter to FIFA, which determined it lacked jurisdiction over the situation.
In the meantime, Alvarez has been working to mend his rapport with Atletico fans. The striker scored the decisive goal in a recent match against Deportivo La Coruna, marking his second consecutive scoring game. This performance helped Atletico close the gap to just two points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Following the match, Alvarez expressed remorse for comments made during the 2026 World Cup, where he mentioned his aspiration to play for Barcelona, a statement that initiated a transfer dispute throughout the summer transfer window. “It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I’d be angry, too, especially given how they’ve supported me since I arrived,” he said.
Despite having received negative reactions from fans earlier this season, Alvarez was met with a standing ovation from parts of the crowd after his goal on Saturday, indicating a gradual improvement in his relationship with the supporters.
Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal valued at up to 95 million euros ($111 million). He has scored 51 goals in 115 appearances for Atletico, following a successful stint with Manchester City, where he netted 36 goals in 103 matches.
