UNIOSUN VC warns 54 inducted lab scientists against diagnostic errors

Osun State University Inducts New Medical Laboratory Scientists

The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Professor Clement Adebooye, urged newly inducted medical laboratory scientists to maintain diligence, accuracy, and empathy in their professional practice during the university’s second induction ceremony. The ceremony welcomed 54 new members into the profession.

Professor Adebooye emphasized the pivotal role of medical laboratory scientists in healthcare delivery, stating that their work significantly influences doctors’ diagnoses and treatment plans. “You are in the scheme of first responders,” he said. “The accuracy of your work would significantly influence medical decisions and patient outcomes.”

He warned that any inaccuracies in laboratory results could misguide medical practitioners, potentially leading to inappropriate treatment and adverse patient outcomes. “The survival of the patient is also in balance,” he cautioned, noting that patients’ chances of recovery depend on the reliability of laboratory investigations.

Adebooye challenged the inductees to be meticulous in collecting, handling, and analyzing specimens, particularly in tests related to liver and kidney functions, blood sugar levels, and microbiology. He also called on them to demonstrate empathy during patient interactions, especially during sample collection that may cause discomfort or anxiety. “You have to persuade that person. Communicate respectfully with patients,” he advised.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the potential grave repercussions of professional mistakes, noting that a single error could have lasting consequences for families. “Inaccurate results and wrong diagnoses could contribute to serious medical complications, including reproductive problems,” he stated. He stressed the need for accuracy in DNA and specialized laboratory investigations, urging the inductees to ensure the correct collection of samples.

Earlier in the ceremony, Professor Daniel Adekanle, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, congratulated the new inductees, labeling medical laboratory science as a fundamental pillar of modern healthcare. He underscored the necessity of laboratory investigations for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, urging the professionals to uphold integrity, compassion, and diagnostic accuracy.

Adekanle assured the inductees of the college’s commitment to academic excellence and professional development, while also recognizing the contributions of university staff, clinical training partners, and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria.

Dr. Donald Ofili, Registrar/CEO of the Medical and Laboratory Scientists Council of Nigeria, represented by Shehu Okanlawon, requested the university to initiate postgraduate programs within the faculty, underscoring the growing demand for advanced training in the field.
