WAFU B Women’s Champions League: Edo Queens ready for Ampem Darkoa showdown

Edo Queens have announced their readiness for the WAFU-B final match against Ampem Darkoa Ladies, according to reports from DAILY POST.

The championship clash is set to take place today in Cairo, Egypt. The Nigerian champions expressed their determination ahead of the game, stating they are prepared to face their Ghanaian rivals. In a post on X, the team declared, “Focused and ready for tomorrow’s WAFU-B final extra time against Ampem Darkoa Ladies. Fighting till the End.”

The victor of this match will earn a spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League. The two teams previously competed in the WAFU-B final on September 5 at the 4th August Stadium in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, where the match ended in a 2-2 draw after regulation time. Edo Queens triumphed 4-1 in the subsequent penalty shootout and were initially recognized as WAFU-B champions, celebrating their victory alongside the trophy and a qualification ticket.

However, Ampem Darkoa lodged a formal protest with the Ghana Football Association on September 11, claiming that the competition regulations necessitate two 15-minute periods of extra time before a penalty shootout in a final match.

On September 26, the CAF Organising Committee for Women’s Football upheld this protest, referencing Articles 13.1 and 72.4 of the CAF Women’s Champions League Regulations, which stipulate that an additional 30 minutes of play is required if a final is tied after 90 minutes. The committee annulled the penalty shootout but maintained the 2-2 scoreline.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) subsequently appealed on behalf of Edo Queens, contending that the team followed the referee’s decision and should not be penalized for an administrative oversight. On October 16, the CAF Appeal Board dismissed this appeal and mandated that the final resume from the start of extra time, under new officiating, at a neutral venue.
