2026 U-17 WWC: Flamingos beat Mexico 2-1 to reach quarter-finals

Mexico began its Round of 16 match against Nigeria with promising intensity but found it difficult to penetrate Nigeria’s strong defensive line. The Nigerian team, known as the Flamingos, gradually took control and went ahead five minutes before halftime when Oluebube Umejiaku scored from inside the box, marking her third goal of the tournament.
After the break, Nigeria continued to assert dominance, applying sustained pressure that forced Mexico into a defensive stance. Their efforts were rewarded in the 71st minute when Mary Dunstan struck a powerful shot, extending Nigeria’s lead to 2-0.
Despite the deficit, Mexico fought back and succeeded in scoring through Emily Delgado during stoppage time, setting the stage for a nervous finish. Ultimately, Nigeria maintained their composure to win 2-1 and advance to the quarter-finals.
The Flamingos will next face Venezuela, with a spot in the semi-finals on the line.
