Army Chief tasks Regimental Sergeant Majors on discipline, mentorship, professionalism

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Nigerian Army, has urged Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) to enhance discipline, mentorship, and regimentation as the force seeks to modernize and expand its operations.

During the closing ceremony of the Second Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention 2026, held on Friday in Benin City, Edo State, Shaibu emphasized the pivotal role that RSMs play in improving operational effectiveness, fostering professionalism, and bolstering national security.

The five-day convention, which commenced on November 2, gathered RSMs from different Army formations and units, along with representatives from sister services and other security agencies.

Shaibu encouraged RSMs to address issues of misconduct within the ranks, specifically highlighting drug abuse, gambling, absenteeism, and misuse of social media as behaviors that could undermine military discipline and professionalism. He commended Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), for his address on tackling drug abuse, which he described as noteworthy.

Earlier in the day, the COAS visited the Headquarters of the 4 Brigade, where he recognized the efforts of officers and soldiers in maintaining peace and security in their area. He noted that operational challenges raised by the Brigade Commander during his visit had been promptly addressed.

Shaibu stressed the importance of the troops’ commitment to protecting lives and property, defending Nigerians’ interests, and confronting threats to security. He underscored the necessity for military operations to adhere to established laws and prioritize civilian protection.

In his remarks, the COAS called on RSMs and all personnel to maintain discipline, professionalism, and dedication to their constitutional responsibilities, stating that strong regimentation and exemplary conduct are essential for cultivating a more combat-ready and resilient Army.

He also expressed gratitude to the General Officer Commanding the 2 Division, contributors to the convention, the Edo State Government, and the state’s residents for their support. Shaibu acknowledged the ongoing backing of President Bola Tinubu in his role as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
