Kaduna residents turn out en masse for monthly sanitation exercise

Kaduna Residents Participate in Monthly Sanitation Exercise

Residents across Kaduna State participated enthusiastically in a monthly sanitation exercise on Saturday, a program reintroduced by Governor Uba Sani. This initiative, designed to encourage community cleaning efforts, has received praise from local citizens.

The state government officially designated the last Saturday of every month as sanitation day, a declaration made by Commissioner for Information Ahmed Maiyaki in November 2025. The event is scheduled to run from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., during which residents are encouraged to clean their surroundings and dispose of waste appropriately.

In a statement released on Friday, February 27, 2026, Commissioner Maiyaki confirmed that the next sanitation exercise would occur on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Observers noted that the event was conducted smoothly, with a temporary halt to vehicular traffic and business activities throughout the state during the designated hours.

A correspondent for DAILY POST reported that residents adhered closely to the guidelines. Many could be seen clearing litter from their neighborhoods, while children helped collect waste harmful to public health. Major commercial areas, including Kaduna Central Market and markets in Kakuri, Nassarawa, and Kawo, along with motor parks, were closed during the exercise.

Titus Ademu, a bus driver at Television Garage, expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness in promoting public health. “When we keep our environment clean, we will be free from all manner of sicknesses, and the entire state will look good and attractive,” he said.

Joshua Agada, a local landlord, highlighted the significance of a designated cleaning day to prevent pests from entering homes. He noted that regularly cleaning drainage systems is essential to mitigate flooding during the rainy season.

Businesswoman Rhoda Ademu, who operates at Kaduna Central Market, remarked that maintaining cleanliness, including in shops, would likely draw more customers.

Following the three-hour sanitation effort, businesses throughout Kaduna resumed operations, reflecting the community’s commitment to a cleaner environment.
