Nigerian govt issues travel advisory as repairs begin on Kara Bridge in Lagos

The Federal Ministry of Works has issued a travel advisory for motorists in response to upcoming repairs on the Kara Bridge along the outbound Lagos route.
In a statement released Saturday, Olayiwola Komolafe, the Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, announced that the repair works will commence on March 10, 2026, and are projected to conclude by March 24, 2026. The maintenance will involve the replacement of damaged expansion joints on the bridge.
To alleviate anticipated traffic congestion, the ministry is urging drivers to utilize alternative routes. Motorists traveling from Ikorodu to Mowe, Sagamu, and Ibadan are advised to consider Shimawa or Mosinmi as their detours. Those departing from Lagos Island may find the Epe corridor via Ijebu Ode a viable option to reach their destinations.
Additionally, the ministry recommends that road users plan their journeys carefully, emphasizing that the shortest route may not necessarily be the fastest during the repair period. Motorists are encouraged to adhere to traffic management instructions and exercise caution around the construction area.
While acknowledging that the partial closure of the bridge may cause temporary inconvenience, the ministry appeals for public understanding and cooperation, underscoring the necessity of the work to enhance the safety, durability, and stability of the country’s road infrastructure.
