Iranian Official Warns US Against Attacking Power Infrastructure
Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, issued a stern warning to the United States concerning threats to target the country’s energy infrastructure. His remarks follow a statement from President Donald Trump, who indicated that the U.S. could incapacitate Iran’s electrical systems within one hour.
“If they do that, the whole region will go dark in less than half an hour, and darkness provides ample opportunity to hunt down U.S. servicemen running for safety,” Larijani said on social media platform X.
Larijani’s comments came a day after Trump claimed that U.S. military actions had significantly diminished Iran’s military capabilities in the ongoing conflict, which began on February 28. “They’ve got no navy, they’ve got no air force, they’ve got no anti-aircraft… We’re just riding free range over that country,” Trump said at a press conference in Maryland.
The president warned that should military operations intensify, the U.S. would not hesitate to strike Iran’s power systems. “We could take apart their electric capacity within one hour, and it would take them 25 years to rebuild it,” he stated.
During a campaign rally in Hebron, Kentucky, Trump further claimed that the U.S. had already “won” the war with Iran and emphasized the need to “finish the job.”
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that approximately 6,000 targets have been hit in Iran since operations commenced 12 days ago, resulting in significant damage to Iranian naval assets, including over 90 vessels.
Larijani’s warnings coincided with a statement from Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who called for national unity and reaffirmed that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed to exert pressure on Iran’s adversaries. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared it would not allow “a litre of oil” to pass through the vital waterway.
Amid ongoing attacks from U.S. and Israeli forces, global oil prices have seen considerable volatility. In a post on Truth Social, Trump remarked that rising oil prices benefit the U.S. economy. “The United States is the largest oil producer in the world, by far, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money,” he wrote, adding that stopping Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons is of greater importance.
The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for potential escalations in the conflict.
