Tensions have been heightened by the actions of Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq, who have vowed to attack U.S. facilities, especially the embassy. In fact, one group announced a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the identification of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Iraq, suggesting that some officials might be seeking refuge in civilian residences.
This incident marks the second attack on the U.S. Embassy since the onset of the recent war. On Friday, the embassy elevated its security alert to Level 4, warning that Iranian-backed groups have previously targeted U.S. citizens and interests and may continue to do so.
