US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq attacked with missile that hits helipad | US-Israel war on Iran News

Missile Strike Targets U.S. Embassy in Baghdad

Published March 14, 2026

A missile attack struck the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, causing significant damage and sending smoke billowing from the compound. The incident occurred within the heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses foreign embassies and Iraqi government institutions.

An Iraqi security source reported that the missile hit a helipad at the embassy, damaging part of its air defense system. Specific details regarding the extent of the damage or casualties have not been released. The U.S. Embassy had not commented on the attack as of the latest reports.

Videos circulating on social media platforms captured smoke rising from the embassy following the missile strike. Mahmoud Abdelwahed, reporting for Al Jazeera, stated that no immediate casualty figures or damage assessments were available.

Tensions have been heightened by the actions of Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq, who have vowed to attack U.S. facilities, especially the embassy. These groups have expressed intentions to retaliate for the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a former supreme leader of Iran, who was killed in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike at the onset of the current conflict.

In fact, one group announced a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the identification of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Iraq, suggesting that some officials might be seeking refuge in civilian residences.

This incident marks the second attack on the U.S. Embassy since the onset of the recent war. On Friday, the embassy elevated its security alert to Level 4, warning that Iranian-backed groups have previously targeted U.S. citizens and interests and may continue to do so.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad is one of the largest diplomatic facilities globally and has faced numerous attacks by rockets and drones in the past. Several armed groups supported by Tehran, classified by the U.S. as terrorist organizations, continue to launch regular assaults against U.S. military bases in the region.

The missile strike coincided with recent bombings targeting the Iran-affiliated group, Kataib Hezbollah, resulting in the deaths of two of its members, including a prominent figure, according to security sources.

Iraq has become a focal point in the broader conflict involving U.S. and Iranian interests, experiencing aggression from both sides. While Iran and its proxies have targeted U.S. bases, the U.S. has conducted airstrikes against pro-Iran factions.

The situation in Iraq remains volatile as the region continues to grapple with the complexities of this escalating conflict.
