Hamas Calls for Restraint from Iran Amid Regional Tensions
The Palestinian group Hamas has urged Iran to refrain from attacking neighboring Gulf states while emphasizing Tehran’s right to defend itself against perceived aggression from Israel and the United States.
In a statement released on Saturday, Hamas appealed to its “brothers in Iran” to avoid targeting countries in the region and called for an end to the ongoing conflict that has engulfed much of the Middle East.
Hamas’s statement comes in the wake of escalating violence following the conflict that began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and Israel’s subsequent military response, which significantly affected the Gaza Strip. Since the start of hostilities, over 72,000 casualties have been reported, with Gulf nations, particularly Qatar, actively involved in mediation and humanitarian efforts.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in February, several Gulf states have reported missile and drone attacks linked to Iran. In its statement, Hamas affirmed Iran’s right to respond to such aggression “by all available means in accordance with international norms and laws,” but insisted on the importance of not targeting neighboring nations.
Hamas also called for cooperation among regional countries to “halt this aggression and preserve the bonds of fraternity among them.”
Historically, Iran has provided financial and military support to Hamas, which is part of the broader “axis of resistance” that includes groups like Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthis.
Last month, Gulf states pledged more than $4 billion in financial support to U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace,” signaling their backing for efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These pledges were made during the board’s initial meeting in Washington, with both Qatar and Saudi Arabia committing $1 billion each, while Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates pledged further financial assistance.
Throughout the recent conflict, Qatar has been a key mediator, working alongside the United States and Egypt. A U.S.-backed ceasefire agreement has been in place since October 2025, intended to halt Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Despite this, reports indicate that Israeli forces have continued to violate the ceasefire, resulting in additional Palestinian casualties.
As tensions remain high, the call for restraint from Hamas reflects ongoing concerns about regional stability and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
