Defections won’t kill opposition — PDP hits APC

PDP Accuses APC of Inducing Defections

By Luminous Jannamike

ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of facilitating political defections through inducement and pressure tactics. The PDP contends that such strategies will not diminish the opposition’s strength or garner public support for the ruling party.

These statements come amid rising political tensions as defections have become increasingly frequent across the nation. The PDP asserts that the defections proclaimed by the APC are intended to weaken rival parties and create a false perception of the opposition’s decline. The party maintains that a significant number of Nigerians remain dissatisfied with the APC’s governance.

In a statement issued by Ini Ememobong, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, the party responded to comments made by Felix Morka, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary. Ememobong criticized Morka’s claims, likening them to propaganda tactics reminiscent of historical totalitarian regimes.

“Delusional propaganda does not only harm a nation; it ultimately consumes its proponents,” Ememobong said, referencing the historical implications of such strategies. He called Morka’s defense of the APC’s actions a misrepresentation of the political climate, suggesting that the defection of some political figures does not equate to the dissolution of the PDP.

Ememobong added that, despite the defections facilitated by the APC, public sentiment has consistently rejected the ruling party, which he claims is failing to address the needs of Nigerians. He cited issues related to party membership registrations as evidence of the APC’s struggles to retain support.

“The recent disruption of the City Boys event in Owerri foreshadows the challenges facing the APC nationwide,” he said.

The PDP further asserted that individuals defending the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will ultimately face historical judgment. “When the history of this period is documented, those who supported this administration will be remembered unfavorably,” Ememobong concluded.

This ongoing dispute reflects the contentious political landscape in Nigeria as the parties navigate a complex web of alliances and defections leading up to future elections.
