Amnesty condemns attack on NDC supporters at Enugu airport

Amnesty International has condemned an alleged attack on supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State. The supporters had gathered to welcome the party’s governorship candidate, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa.
In a statement posted on its verified Facebook account, the human rights organization expressed concern over reports of the attack, which included circulating videos that showed individuals fleeing amid claims of gunfire and tear gas.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the ruthless attack on supporters of the NDC gathered at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu,” the organization stated.
Some supporters reported being shot at and affected by tear gas as they escaped the scene. Additionally, witnesses accused security forces of standing by as the incident unfolded.
Videos uploaded online appear to show individuals with blood-stained clothing, and multiple supporters were reported to have sustained injuries during the event.
According to Amnesty International, the incident is part of a troubling trend of violence against opposition members across Nigeria. The organization warned that ongoing attacks and intimidation could undermine political engagement and restrict opposition groups’ right to assemble peacefully.
“Such repeated attacks and intimidation against opposition figures could make it more difficult for them to associate freely and hold public gatherings,” the statement emphasized.
Amnesty International’s condemnation raises significant concerns regarding the safety of political supporters and the safeguarding of freedom of association and peaceful assembly in Nigeria.
