Mikel Arteta Confident About Future as Arsenal Prepares for New Season

Published Aug. 15, 2026

Mikel Arteta, who led Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years, has reassured fans regarding his future as the club approaches the new season. With just a year remaining on his current contract, Arteta expressed optimism that negotiations for a new deal will be resolved.

Since joining Arsenal in 2019, Arteta has become an integral part of the club’s resurgence. His latest contract extension, signed in 2024, was a reflection of the success he achieved, culminating in the Premier League title won in May. As Arsenal prepares to kick off their 2026-27 campaign against Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, the lack of a new contract announcement has raised questions among supporters.

“I want to be here,” Arteta stated. “I am extremely happy and feel very grateful to work with the people that I work with. When we have the possibility, we will resolve that.”

Arteta indicated that his focus has been on the club’s summer transfer activity rather than his contract status. He emphasized that both he and the club are content with the current situation, allowing negotiations to proceed organically.

“There is always another priority,” he noted. “Everybody feels comfortable that the time on the contract is not going to be an issue. My will is to be here and I am very happy here. My feeling from the club is the same.”

Arsenal has strengthened its title-winning squad this summer, acquiring Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and Club Brugge forward Christos Tzolis. The club also made Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent and signed Illan Meslier on a free transfer.

Despite heavy spending by rivals Manchester City, Tottenham, and Chelsea, Arteta remains confident in his squad’s capabilities. He refrained from pursuing players like Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior but expressed satisfaction with the team’s ambition.

“I am really happy with the squad and the players that I have, and I am really happy with the ambition of the club,” said Arteta, who has been linked with potential defensive signings Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa and Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen. “We have super strengths and we need to be very conscious of areas where we might lack in comparison to other clubs.”

Arteta affirmed that Arsenal will continue to pursue a strategy that aligns with its values and structure as they prepare to compete effectively in all competitions this season.
