ASUU calls off strike in three Lagos universities

LAGOS, Nigeria — Academic activities are set to resume at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) following the suspension of an industrial action by university lecturers.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced the decision on Friday after successful negotiations regarding staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding agreements. This development has brought relief to students and parents affected by the disruption in educational activities.
In a joint statement, ASUU leaders characterized the negotiations as a significant advance toward enhancing faculty welfare and fulfilling prior commitments. The statement was co-signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee at ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman of ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUSTECH.
The union expressed appreciation for the support it received from various groups during the negotiation process, including the media, civil society organizations, traditional rulers, students, and parents. Special recognition was given to pro-worker organizations such as the Joint Action Front (JAF), Education Rights Concern (ERC), and the Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights (CDWR) for their efforts in advocating for quality public tertiary education.
ASUU leaders also commended traditional rulers for their interventions and acknowledged the patience exhibited by students and their families during the strike period.
“Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organizations,” the statement read.
The union confirmed that its members would return to classrooms immediately, affirming their commitment to maintaining academic standards and ensuring quality education. However, ASUU stated it would continue discussions with the Lagos State Government to address unresolved issues related to its members’ welfare package.
“As our members return to the classrooms, we reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence and quality university education,” the statement concluded.
