Bandits demand N5m ‘tax’ from Katsina villages

Armed Bandits Demand Taxes from Katsina Villagers
Residents of several villages in Dan-Musa and Matazu local government areas of Katsina State reported that armed bandits have demanded a payment of 5 million naira as a form of tax.
Communities affected include Mara Dangeza, Unguwar Tofa, and Gidan Goge. According to local sources, the attackers have set a deadline for residents to comply, threatening violence if payments are not made.
Bakatsine, a security expert in the North-West region, noted on social media platform X that this incident follows a peace agreement established between local stakeholders and the bandits in November 2022.
The new demands have prompted some families to flee their homes in fear of potential attacks. Residents are urging government authorities and security forces to intervene as extortion tactics contribute to worsening insecurity in rural areas.
