Gunmen Attack Anambra Police, Leaving Two Officers Dead

Anambra, Nigeria — Anambra State has experienced a resurgence in violent crime following a deadly attack on police personnel in which at least two officers were killed. The ambush occurred late Sunday night along the Awa-Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road.

Gunmen, whose identities remain unknown, confronted officers on patrol and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of the two officers. The bodies were discovered on the roadway, prompting alarm among local residents.

A tricycle operator who witnessed the attack described the chaotic scene. He reported hearing gunfire while driving along the route, which led him to abandon his vehicle and seek shelter in nearby bushes.

After some time, he returned to the scene, where he found the two officers lying on the ground, alongside their police van. Concerned for the safety of one officer, whom he believed might still be alive, he recorded a voice note to alert police authorities.

“I decided to make this voice note to post on the platform because I think one of the policemen is still alive,” the operator said. “I hope someone will inform the police to rescue their members.”

Attempts to reach the Anambra State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, for comment on the attack were unsuccessful, as his phone was not reachable at the time of this report. No official police statement has been issued regarding the incident.

This attack marks a concerning shift in the state’s recent tranquility, following a period of relative peace that followed previous efforts to combat criminal activities linked to individuals posing as Biafra agitators.
