Military Retirees Protest Pension Adjustment Formula in Abuja

ABUJA – Military retirees on Tuesday barricaded the entrance to the Military Pensions Board office in Dutse Alhaji, protesting the formula used for adjusting their pensions.

The veterans utilized canopies and chairs to block access to the premises. Armed soldiers were present to prevent them from entering the office.

This protest follows a demonstration held in September at the Ministry of Defence, where retirees demanded an increase in their pensions after salary adjustments were made for active military personnel.

Defense Minister Christopher Musa had reportedly assured the retirees that their pensions would be increased in October. However, the veterans have voiced dissatisfaction with the calculation method adopted by the Military Pensions Board, alleging that it short-changes some retirees.

They argue that the adjustment formula fails to adequately reflect the salary increases that active military personnel received. This latest demonstration highlights ongoing concerns among retired military personnel regarding their welfare and pension entitlements, despite previous assurances from the Defense Minister.

The retirees are insisting on a fair adjustment of their pensions, emphasizing that the calculation method should properly take into account the salary increases that were the catalyst for their earlier protests.
