Can the ICJ help end the war in the eastern DRC? | Genocide

Democratic Republic of Congo Files Suit Against Rwanda in International Court of Justice

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has initiated legal action against Rwanda, accusing its neighbor of supporting armed groups and directly participating in conflicts within its eastern provinces.

In a formal complaint filed with the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the DRC seeks to compel the Rwandan government to cease what it describes as illegal operations on its territory. Additionally, Kinshasa is pursuing reparations for both victims and the government due to the alleged incursions.

The situation between the two countries remains tense, as ongoing efforts by external nations aim to mediate and resolve the conflict.

Experts are questioning whether the ICJ’s involvement could substantively influence these diplomatic initiatives.

  • Demas Kiprono – Executive Director, International Commission of Jurists, Kenya
