Court orders expedited trial in alleged coup plot against Tinubu’s government

Federal High Court Orders Expedited Trial for Six Defendants Accused of Coup Plot
A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled an expedited trial for six individuals charged with conspiring to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik set the trial dates for April 29, 30, and May 4, 5. During the proceedings, she will also consider the defendants’ bail applications.
Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi informed the court that the prosecution is prepared and has witnesses available in accordance with the court’s schedule.
Counsel for the first defendant, Mohammed Ilayepo, confirmed that his client’s bail application is ready for consideration. However, Justice Abdulmalik ruled that the trial would continue before addressing bail requests.
Lawyers representing the second, third, and sixth defendants expressed concerns over their limited preparation time and the complexity of the charges. In response, the judge encouraged all parties to agree on a timeline that would facilitate a prompt trial, leading to the establishment of the scheduled hearing dates.
