Ebola: Nigeria’s risk is low – WHO

WHO Declares Low Ebola Risk for Nigeria

The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed that the risk of Ebola virus transmission in Nigeria remains low compared to neighboring countries in West Africa, according to statements made by Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme.

In an interview on Arise Television’s “Morning Show” on Tuesday, Ihekweazu noted that this outbreak marks only the ninth time in history that an Ebola outbreak has been classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

“Uganda is currently the only country reporting confirmed Ebola cases outside the Democratic Republic of Congo, reinforcing that Nigeria’s risk is low,” he stated.

Ihekweazu emphasized the seriousness of the current outbreak, which necessitates a coordinated international response, given that it has already spread to multiple countries. He highlighted that this is the third occasion Ebola has reached this level of alert, with more than 300 confirmed cases reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Ebola virus is recognized as a severe and often fatal zoonotic pathogen that causes viral hemorrhagic fever in humans and non-human primates.
