Transmission Company of Nigeria Declares Force Majeure Following Tower Collapse
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared a force majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi-Niamey transmission line after three transmission towers in Kebbi State collapsed.
In a statement released on Friday, TCN reported that the towers—designated T109, T110, and T111—collapsed in Chibike Village following severe rainfall accompanied by a windstorm.
The line experienced a trip event at 5:38 p.m. on August 26, 2026. An attempted reclosure at 6:03 p.m. failed, with the line tripping again immediately thereafter.
TCN personnel conducted a patrol to identify faults and subsequently discovered the three collapsed towers. This incident has disrupted bulk power transmission to Niamey, Niger Republic, through the affected line.
The company has mobilized staff and resources to the site to expedite the rehabilitation of the damaged towers and restore service. TCN expressed regret for the disruption and assured customers in Niamey that urgent measures were being implemented to return to normal supply as quickly as possible.
