Shehu Sani Criticizes Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai Amid Corruption Allegations
Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has responded to recent comments made by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, asserting that El-Rufai is facing the consequences of what Sani described as “irresponsible leadership” during his tenure.
In an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program on Friday, Sani remarked that El-Rufai showed a lack of respect for the rule of law while in office, citing instances where many individuals were arrested and imprisoned under El-Rufai’s administration.
El-Rufai is currently detained following a court order stemming from allegations of corruption during his time as governor. He has claimed in recent statements that he feels abandoned by friends, family, and former colleagues whom he supported in the past.
Sani pointed out that El-Rufai has been in detention for approximately 200 days, emphasizing the severity of imprisonment. “For someone like me who has been in prison for four years, I don’t think anyone can lecture me on detention and the pains of imprisonment,” he said. He noted that a loss of social connections is a natural consequence of being out of circulation.
Sani further asserted that El-Rufai is “paying the price” for his governance style. He expressed concern for those who express sympathy for El-Rufai but emphasized the importance of recognizing the temporary nature of political office.
“He was in office; he had no respect for the rule of law; he didn’t obey court orders; he arrested many people and sent them to jail. Today, he has found himself in the very place where he took so many people,” Sani added.
Sani’s comments reflect broader criticisms regarding the leadership and governance practices in Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, which he characterized as marked by misgovernance, irresponsible leadership, and the use of state resources to target political opponents.
